Understanding Verrucas & Warts
What is a Verruca
Verrucae, also known as plantar warts, are viral lesions that typically appear on the soles of the feet. They can be hard, flaky or rough and are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).
These warts can be painful, especially when located on weight-bearing areas of the foot, making walking and daily activities uncomfortable.
What causes Verrucas?
The HPV virus invades the skin through direct (skin to skin) or indirect contact (e.g. towels and floors of communal areas). The virus enters through small cuts or breaks in the skin.
Once entered, it multiplies and causes an over-production of keratin, giving the verruca its rough, cauliflower appearance. They occur most commonly in children and young adults.
Signs of a Verruca (Plantar Wart)
- Rough, thickened skin that resembles a callus
- Small black dots (clotted blood vessels)
- Pain or tenderness when pressure is applied
- Irregular shape, may appear alone or in clusters
- Thick, rough, yellowish texture similar to a callus
- Distorted skin ridges around the wart
Professional Treatment Options
Our podiatrist will assess your condition and create a personalised treatment plan. Treatment varies depending on age, location, size, and number of verrucae present.
Swift Microwave Treatment
Swift is a non-invasive treatment which uses microwaves to raise the temperature in the verruca. This stimulates a powerful immune response through heat stress reaction, leading to the shrinking and eventual disappearance of the verruca or wart.
Non-Invasive
No needles, no cutting, no chemicals

Debridement
Involves removing the thickened, dead skin on the surface of the verruca. Using a scalpel, our podiatrist will reduce the size of the verruca and make it more comfortable, especially when walking or wearing shoes. This can also help prepare the area for other treatments.
Verrutop Treatment
A topical solution is applied directly to the verruca, causing it to dehydrate and peel away over time. Verrutop works by breaking down the protein structure of the wart, leading to the natural shedding of the affected skin without the need for extreme temperatures or aggressive chemicals.
